A suicidal foreigner survived after jumping from the 6th floor of a condominium in Pattaya, thanks to an air cushion installed near the building.

In a shocking incident in Pattaya, a foreigner jumped from the 6th floor of a condominium despite three hours of police attempts to talk him out of it. According to the Thai publication Khaosod, the incident happened in Building B of the eight-storey condominium in Soi Chaiyapruek District 3.

Around noon, a 40-year-old man of European appearance began showing signs of restlessness by pacing back and forth on the balcony of his room. Disaster Prevention Unit staff promptly placed a vast air cushion on the ground before the building, anticipating a possible accident.

Although the man seemed to calm down at one point, he suddenly became agitated again. Taking advantage of the officers’ momentary distraction, he climbed over the balcony’s iron railing and jumped. Fortunately, the man landed on an air cushion and fell into the pool. Lifeguards quickly extracted him from the water, finding injuries to his neck, a split lip, broken teeth and abrasions all over his body.

The story of this incident began the night before. A maid at the condominium said that around 9 p.m. on August 15, a 31-year-old Russian resident named Fedor found the man sitting in front of a shop about 500 metres away from the building. The stranger had cuts on his wrists. Showing sympathy, Fedor brought him to his room and treated the wounds.

However, by 8:30 the following day, the foreigner became agitated, shouted, ‘I want to die,’ and went out on the balcony. The condominium staff immediately called the police. Tourist police, immigration and officers from the local Pattaya police station arrived on the scene. Despite their best efforts, they could not dissuade the man from his intentions.

Police plan to wait for the victim’s condition to improve before investigating the cause of the incident. It is worth noting that authorities are also concerned about Fedor’s condition. A year ago, on 13 August, his Russian girlfriend fell from a condominium balcony, which was a severe injury to him. The recent incident caused him a lot of stress, and he has been under the care of specialists for some time.

The case emphasises the importance of psychological support and mindfulness, especially in tourist areas where people can find themselves in difficult situations far from home.
