A famous Spanish chef has been found guilty of the brutal murder of a Colombian surgeon on Thailand’s Phangan Island and sentenced to life in prison.

A court on the Thai island of Samui has sentenced Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, a YouTube-famous chef and member of a famous Spanish acting dynasty, after convicting him of premeditated murder. Daniel, 30, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Colombian plastic surgeon Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, 44, in August 2023 on the famous tourist island of Phangan.

The incident has attracted considerable attention in Spain, not only because of the brutality of the crime but also because of the prominence of the accused’s family. Daniel’s father, Rodolfo Sancho, is a well-known actor in Spain, contributing to the influx of Spanish journalists to the trial.

At the trial, Sancho claimed that the conflict arose after an attempted sexual assault by Arrieta. According to his testimony, during the fight, Arrieta fell, hit his head on the bathtub, lost consciousness and died. Sancho admitted that he then dismembered the victim’s body and disposed of the remains by scattering them on the island and dumping them in the sea.

The court initially handed down a death sentence, which was later commuted to life imprisonment due to Sancho’s cooperation with justice during the trial. The lawyer for the victim’s family, Bussakorn Kaewliled, expressed satisfaction with the sentence, noting that the family would also receive financial compensation.

‘The defendant is, of course, upset, but the tragic loss that befell the family of the deceased cannot be forgotten,’ Bussakorn commented on Sancho’s reaction to the verdict.

It is important to note that Thailand formally retains the death penalty for premeditated murder, but actual executions are sporadic, most recently in 2018. Arrieta’s family had expressed a wish for life imprisonment before sentencing, which was eventually taken into account by the court.

Sancho Bronchalo’s case has become one of the most discussed in Spanish and international media, shedding light on the darker sides of life beyond the cameras and cookery shows where the defendant has shone until now.
