A Russian man left with a young son after divorcing his Thai wife is desperately seeking work and help in Phuket to start a new life.

A touching story of human kindness and the desire for a better life unfolds in the resort town of Phuket in Thailand. According to The Phuket News, resident Ekawit Suratwadi appealed to the Thai public via social media by posting a video asking for help for his friend, 57-year-old Russian Oleg Magdeev, who was in a difficult situation.

Oleg Magdeev, who has lived in Phuket for several years, has faced serious difficulties after his recent separation from his Thai wife. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the man worked as a captain of a 60-foot yacht for four years, but due to the economic downturn, he was forced to sell his house and move to Chainat province with his family.

In Chainat, the couple built a house on land owned by Oleg’s wife and purchased a car registered in her name. However, the wife defaulted on the car’s payments, confiscating it. After the relationship broke down, Oleg returned to Phuket with his 5-year-old son, finding himself in an extremely tight financial situation.

Magdeev is currently renting a house in Thalang district but has been unable to pay the rent since June. Despite the kind-hearted landlady, Khun Kanda, reducing the monthly fee from 7,000 to 4,000 baht (about $200 to $115), Oleg’s funds have completely dried up. He and his son now live in the house rent-free but realise that this situation cannot last forever.

‘I explained to the landlord that I have to rent a motorbike to take my son to school, which makes it very difficult to pay for housing,’ Oleg says in a video message. – My landlady is very understanding and kind, but the situation is not good, and I need a job to earn money to pay rent and take care of my son.’
Ekavit Suratwadi notes that Oleg has various skills that would be useful to potential employers. He can operate and repair boats up to 60 feet long, although his licence is expired. Magdeev can also repair household appliances, including rice cookers, fans, refrigerators, water pumps and electrical systems.
In the near future, Oleg also needs to make a visa through Ranong to renew his passport, which will require additional expenses. He is keen to do everything properly and legally to ensure proper care for his young son.

Reactions from social media users to the video message were primarily positive. Many condemned the behaviour of the child’s mother, who abandoned her son and expressed support for Oleg’s efforts to get his life together for the boy’s sake.

Ekavit Suratwadi concluded the video by providing contact details for those who would like to help Oleg Magdeev: Ekavit himself can be reached at 090-485-8422, while the landlady Khun Kanda can be reached at 086-478-0898.

Thanks to the community’s support, Oleg Magdeev will be able to overcome the current difficulties and provide his son with a decent future in the hospitable land of Thailand.
