On Tuesday, at least ten individuals died in a shooting incident at Risbergska Campus School, an adult education center located in Örebro, Sweden. This includes the suspected shooter, as stated in a press conference by the Swedish police, who indicated that the operation is still ongoing. The assailant is believed to be of Syrian descent.
The police alerted at 1:30 PM local time and classified the incident during an initial statement as attempted murder, arson, and serious weapons offense. “Multiple individuals sustained injuries from gunfire, and one of them is believed to be the suspect,” stated Roberto Eid Forest, the police chief of Örebro.
During his second update, which took place two hours later, Forest confirmed there were a dozen fatalities inside the building and an unspecified number of injuries. Although he refrained from providing precise statistics, he guaranteed that emergency services were on the scene. At first, police reported that five individuals had been injured in the incident.
Conversely, the agent emphasized that “there appears to be no terrorist motive for the attack.” He explained, “We are collaborating with the secret services, but to my knowledge, the shooter is unknown to the police,” indicating that initial information suggests he acted alone and has no ties to criminal gangs.
“We continue to believe that we have the main perpetrator, although we do not rule out that there are more people involved,” said the police chief. “We are currently identifying the victims,” he added, adding that the operation remains open and the situation is still ‘unclear.’ “I want to point out that the situation can change, and that is the image we have at the moment,” he stressed.
After the shooting, students sought refuge in nearby buildings, and multiple ambulances, along with rescue services, responded to the school. To care for the injured, Örebro Hospital cleared out its emergency room and intensive care unit, according to public broadcaster Radio Sweden.
“At the moment, we are confident that there will be no more attacks. The schools where teachers and students were sheltered have already been evacuated,” said the police chief, referring to several nearby schools that were used while officers scoured the area. Even so, the authorities recommend the population to stay away from the center and have set up an information point for families and relatives.
Lena Warenmark, a teacher at the school, informed SVT public television that when the shooting occurred, there were fewer students present than usual, as many had already left after completing their exams. “We heard three blasts and loud screams,” reported Andreas Sundling, 28, to the Expressen newspaper while he sought refuge in a classroom.
Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his sorrow upon learning of the incident, stating that the government is monitoring the situation closely. He remarked, “Today is a profoundly painful day for all of Sweden. I am thinking of all those whose school day has been disrupted by terror.” In his social media posts, he described the event as ”a nightmare no one should endure.”
“The operation is still ongoing and it is important for the public to follow the information from the police. My call is also for us to now give the Police the peace of mind they need to investigate what happened and how these horrible crimes could have happened,” the prime minister has added.
