In Pattaya, Thai police conducted a raid on a luxury villa, resulting in the arrest of 12 Chinese nationals accused of managing an unlawful online loan scheme.
On February 7th at 10:00 AM, police in Chonburi raided a luxury villa in Pattaya to take down an illegally operated foreign online loan syndicate.
The luxury pool villa, covering more than one rai, featured a main two-story building alongside two smaller structures. Authorities detained 12 Chinese nationals—11 men and one woman—and confiscated 10 computers, 61 mobile phones, passports, electronic bank cards, and cash.
Authorities stated that most suspects entered Thailand on tourist and student visas after August 2024, with two overstaying their visas. One suspect asserted they were merely employees and had never encountered their employer, who reportedly rented the villa via an agency at a rate of 150,000 baht per month since August.
Authorities disclosed that the suspects offered online loans through the WeChat app to clients in China. They randomly selected clients online and provided loans between 2,000 and 3,000 yuan (around 10,000 to 15,000 baht), with interest rates exceeding 30%. Employees reported making 15,000 to 20,000 baht monthly, not including commissions.
The suspects reportedly worked in Dubai for more than five years before moving to Thailand because of the high cost of living. Eventually, authorities uncovered their activities.
The detained individuals are facing charges for operating without a permit. Law enforcement is broadening the inquiry to locate the masterminds orchestrating this operation.
