Thai police have revealed the circumstances of the tragedy: a US citizen allegedly poisoned five people and herself because of debts.

Thai police have revealed the circumstances of the tragedy that occurred in a luxury hotel in the centre of Bangkok, where the bodies of six foreign nationals were found in one of the rooms. According to the Khaosod publication, one of the six victims allegedly poisoned the rest of the group and then committed suicide using a poison more potent than cyanide.

The prime suspect in this horrific crime is believed to be 56-year-old Sherin Chong, a US citizen. According to investigators, she had severe debt problems, which was probably the motive for committing this desperate act.

Police Major General Tiradei Tammasuchi, commander of the Metropolitan Police Department’s investigation division, told reporters that investigators had interviewed the daughter of one of the victims and other witnesses. Their testimonies have shed light on the motives behind the crime.

Interestingly, the room on the fifth floor, where the tragedy occurred, was locked from the inside, and security camera footage did not record the entry or exit of unauthorised persons. This suggests that the perpetrator was one of the six people who died.

Forensic experts found six glasses with drink residue in the room – five on a tray and one on a table. Preliminary analysis showed that the substance found in the glasses resembled cyanide but was more potent, causing rapid death. However, conclusions about the nature of the poison can be made only after the toxicological examination is completed.

Investigators also found out that the room was booked in the name of a seventh person, who turned out to be the sister of one of the deceased. However, she left Thailand on 10 July, a few days before the tragedy, and is not believed to have been involved in the incident.

The tragedy raises essential questions about mental health and financial issues that people face in today’s world. The case of Sherin Chong shows how serious the consequences of debt can be and how important it is to seek help in difficult situations.

The Thai Ministry of Tourism issued a statement expressing deep condolences to the families of the victims and assured that the incident was an exceptional case. Ministry officials emphasised that Thailand remains one of the safest and most welcoming destinations for tourists worldwide.

The investigation into the case is ongoing, and police promise to provide further information as it becomes available. The international community is closely following the developments as it awaits the final results of the investigation.

Despite this shocking incident, Thailand remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, attracting millions of visitors with its rich culture, beautiful beaches and renowned hospitality. The country’s authorities assure that they are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of both locals and visitors to the Kingdom.
