The suspect in the high-profile case, who is currently in custody, has provided important information about other possible murders, in addition to the five incidents already known. This cooperation aims to build public confidence in the ongoing investigation and the authorities’ commitment to uncovering the truth.

The case of serial murders in the Thai province of Chonburi, which has caused a widespread public outcry and attracted the attention of the authorities, has taken a new turn: the key suspect, who has given evidence suggesting there may be more victims, has been placed under the witness protection programme in accordance with Thai law to ensure his safety and to obtain comprehensive information on the case, which affects the interests of both residents and foreign nationals.

According to a well-informed source, 23-year-old Chatchanan Paen-iam, known as ‘Fluke’, is being held in complete isolation at the Najomthien police station in the Sattahip district of Chonburi province. His testimony has proved extremely valuable: he told the police that the gang accused of the massacre of five people may have committed murders of other individuals as well, including specific details such as locations or methods, in addition to the two Russian nationals (a brother and sister) and a Thai family of three.

The police are conducting an intensive interrogation of Chatchanan Paen-iam, which has already lasted more than three hours under the supervision of Chonburi’s chief detective, Colonel Pasakorn Paichit. Investigators are seeking further information about the murders, potential accomplices, and activities linked to loan sharking and debt collection, which may have served as a motive for the murder of the Thai family. This aspect highlights the complexity and multifaceted nature of the criminal connections in the case.

Four people have been arrested on suspicion of the serial murders. In addition to Chatchanan Paen-iam, the arrests include former prisoners Than ‘Pong’ Kertthong, 43, and Thongchai ‘Thong’ Srinil, 39, who were detained in Sa Kaeo Province. The fourth person arrested is 25-year-old Atsadang Chuwong. These arrests show the authorities’ active efforts to bring the case closer to resolution and reassure the public.

According to the investigation, it was Tana Kertthong who committed the brutal murders of 22-year-old Diana Nazimova and 17-year-old Roman Nazimov, Russian nationals, as well as members of a Thai family, including a 17-year-old girl who was raped. The presence of Russian victims highlights the case’s international significance and the Global community’s shared concern for justice.

Tana Kertthong’s criminal record is a cause for particular concern. The Thai Department of Corrections has confirmed that he served seven years, seven months and 25 days in prison for attempted murder, as well as offences involving firearms and drugs. He was released from Rayong Prison as recently as 5 June this year.

Immediately before his release, a special committee comprising representatives from the correctional services, probation services, the administration and the health service drew up and proposed measures to prevent him from returning to a life of crime. In January, the Rayong Provincial Court approved these proposals, ordering Tanu Kertthong to comply with them for two years following his release from prison.

These measures included a ban on any suspicious activities, the requirement to report quarterly to a probation officer, and attendance at a rehabilitation course run by probation staff. However, as recent events have shown, these efforts proved unsuccessful, casting doubt on the effectiveness of the country’s rehabilitation systems for former prisoners.

The direct involvement of high-ranking officials underlines the seriousness of the situation. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Anutin Charnvirakul personally visited the crime scene in Banglamung District, Chonburi, to oversee the investigation’s progress. This shows that the Thai government is prioritising resolving this case and maintaining law and order, particularly when the interests of foreign nationals are at stake. The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities have pledged to examine all the circumstances surrounding the tragedy thoroughly.
