A fire that broke out overnight at a pet market in Bangkok has claimed the lives of thousands of pets, including exotic species. The damage is enormous, and the causes are being investigated.
A devastating fire broke out at a pet market in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district early Tuesday morning. According to preliminary estimates, thousands of animals, including many expensive exotic species, died in the fire.
According to the Chatuchak district administration, the fire started around 4:10 am at Sri Somrat Market, where 118 pet shops were located in an area of 1,400 square metres. The market is located behind the JJ Mall on Kampheng Phet 3.
Swift and decisive action was taken by fire crews from several local stations, who arrived at the scene promptly and managed to bring the fire under control within half an hour.
Sellers said they lost many animals, including ornamental fish, cats, dogs, birds, monkeys, and exotic species, which were worth five- and six-figure sums in baht.
A shopkeeper said the fire started in a shop selling dogs, where owners usually left electric fans on all night to keep the animals comfortable. According to the vendor, thousands of animals died in the fire as the flames quickly spread throughout the market.
Chatuchak district officials are currently assessing the damage to the market and individual vendors to determine the necessary assistance for the victims.
