A Swiss volunteer with the Wildlife Foundation in Chiang Mai used a knife to cut off part of his own arm to free himself from a wild bear clawing at him.
In Thailand’s Chiang Mai province, a 32-year-old Swiss man volunteering with the local Wildlife Foundation in Chiangdao district was seriously injured after being bitten by an Asian black bear on the afternoon of 25 January.
The foreign volunteer was bitten by an Asian black bear while feeding the animal in the foundation’s enclosure during the day. In order to free himself from the bear’s grip on his right arm, the Swiss man had to remove part of his arm with a knife, the Bangkok Post reported.
The incident took place on the grounds of the Wildlife Foundation of this northern province. Helping to care for the animals, 32-year-old Stefan Claudio Specogna reached into the bear’s cage to feed the wild animal. When the Asian black bear suddenly clung to the volunteer’s hand with a dead grip and refused to loosen its grip.
The man, in a state of shock and fearing for his life, decided to use a knife to take away part of his own arm to escape the wild bear’s death grip.
People who witnessed the incident rushed to give the volunteer first aid and sent the man with an elbow injury to Chiangdao Hospital. The Swiss man was later transferred to a private hospital in Chiang Mai for surgery. The missing part of the arm was found in a “shattered” state.
According to the information provided, the Asian black bear was legally kept in the care of the foundation. The animal was originally under the care of Doi Phadaeng National Park in Chiangdao until 2013. Due to some difficulties, the foundation took over the responsibility of caring for the animal.
