Troops patrol southern provinces after the Price of Wood Green Energy Co biomass plant was set on fire by militants who destroyed equipment.

NARATHITHAT, Thailand — Thailand’s Fourth Military Region has stepped up security in the country’s southern provinces after militants attacked a biomass power plant in Waeng district of Narathithat province on Friday, raising concerns among authorities. Lt Gen Paisal Nusang, commander of the Fourth Military Region, said on Sunday that a group of 10 to 15 armed men attacked the Price of Wood Green Energy Co Ltd power plant in tambon Kayu Kla.

The attackers entered the plant on Friday evening. According to Lt Gen Paisal, the militants, threatening the guards with guns, set fire to several vehicles and equipment. Among the destroyed equipment were a six-wheeler truck, a backhoe loader, and several tractors.

The explosions that occurred during the attack caused significant damage to the electrical control system and cooling units of the power plant, which led to the temporary suspension of operations at the facility. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries, Lieutenant General Paisal emphasized

In response to the incident, Lt Gen Paisal ordered increased security at critical infrastructure, including power plants, water plants, and transportation arteries, and active patrols in high-risk areas.

Narathithat Province, located in southern Thailand, is one of the provinces where clashes periodically occur between government forces and separatist groups seeking greater autonomy or independence for the region. Such incidents aimed at undermining energy infrastructure not only cause economic damage but also create tension in the area, complicating efforts to establish lasting peace and stability.

The Thai government is taking active measures to combat extremism and protect citizens. The authorities consider the incident a serious act of sabotage aimed at destabilizing the situation in the region. Strengthening security measures is intended to prevent a recurrence of such incidents and ensure the smooth operation of vital infrastructure facilities. The investigation into the attack is ongoing.
