Thai police in Samut Sakhon province arrested a 48-year-old man suspected of making and selling homemade explosive devices at his home on Friday after receiving credible information about illegal explosive manufacturing and trading in Tha Sai district.
Police officers carried out the operation following an undercover purchase made by an agent at a house located behind the Wat Khlong Khru temple. After confirming evidence of illegal activity, the police stormed the house.
Three hand grenades, 47 short fuses, 14 long fuses, 670 grams of gunpowder, three rocket launchers, and 36 rockets were seized during the raid. The detainee, identified only as Wichan, also known as “Sua Yai Mai” or Silk Tiger, confessed to making and selling various explosives.
Vichan confirmed that he manufactured and sold a wide range of pyrotechnic products, including firecrackers and fireworks. Notably, his customers were mostly students from vocational schools, which raises particular concerns about the potential use of explosives for destructive purposes.
In addition to making explosive devices, the suspect admitted to dealing methamphetamine. He said he recently began selling the drug to meet growing demand from customers.
Vichan is currently in custody and will be charged under the Explosive Substances Act and the Narcotic Drugs Act. Police are continuing their investigation to identify possible accomplices and distribution channels for the explosives and drugs.
The discovery of homemade explosives raises serious concerns about public safety and calls for increased control over the distribution of dangerous substances. Thai law enforcement agencies are taking measures to prevent such incidents and curb illegal activities related to weapons and drugs.
This case highlights the need to strengthen control over the dissemination of information about explosive manufacturing technologies, especially on the Internet, and to increase responsibility for illegal arms and drug trafficking. In addition, preventive work with young people is essential to prevent their involvement in criminal activity.
